By Naomi Seddon
Naomi is on a mission to change workplaces for women globally. As the number of women in the workforce continues to decline, it is more important than ever before to find better ways to support and empower female employees to thrive and succeed.
To do so, will require society to stop thinking of the biological barriers that hold women back as ‘simply women’s issues,’ and instead, to look at how workplaces can make their business more inclusive. “Why?” Naomi askes. “Because it literally makes business sense.”
In her debut release ‘Milk and Margaritas,’ Naomi shares her journey of navigating a range of serious health issues and child loss, and challenges long held myths around women’s health issues and the workplace by highlighting the evidence that demonstrates the link between productivity, profitability and wellness.
Naomi’s story is one of turning tragedy into personal and professional triumph.
As Naomi navigated the difficult process of trying to create milk (i.e. make babies), she instead found herself sitting in a local Mexican restaurant, wiping away tears and drinking margaritas with her husband as they faced another round of difficult and challenging news. In the space of 18 months, Naomi had gone through nine surgeries, over 100 tests, and three rounds of IVF in her quest to become a mother, and sadly, lost four babies through miscarriage. Like many women living with chronic endometriosis and complex health conditions, she wondered if she would ever become a parent. Thankfully, Naomi’s dreams came true when she became the mother of two beautiful twin girls via surrogate. However, her journey didn’t end here.
As both an international lawyer, and board member for Surrogacy Australia, Naomi has learnt a lot along the way about humans and lessons about life, love, sacrifice, commitment, compassion, empathy, culture, diversity, the career ladder (and workplace politics), mentoring and sponsorship.
Naomi is donating a portion of the sale of every copy of Milk and Margaritas to Endometriosis Australia to further assist with research for better diagnosis and treatment options for everyone globally who suffers from this debilitating disease.
